A part number identifies a component across the whole of its production life, and over that life the component is revised. Most revisions change nothing an operator would notice, which is exactly why one number continues to cover them. Some change which firmware levels are supported, which options the part works alongside, or how it behaves in a particular configuration.
Interchangeable Until It Matters
Because the exceptions are a small minority, treating the part number as the identity works almost always.
