Each Slot Reaches Only Certain Bays

In an HPE blade enclosure, the mezzanine slots on a server blade are hard-wired to specific interconnect bays in the back of the chassis. That mapping is fixed in the enclosure design. A card installed in a slot that reaches bays holding no matching module is fully installed, fully healthy and connected to nothing at all.

Nothing in the Enclosure Calls It Wrong

The management interface reports the card present and the interconnect modules present, because both statements are true. It has no reason to say that this card cannot reach those modules — that is a consequence of the physical mapping rather than a fault condition. Moroccan operators describing this to us report a supported card that simply does not appear on the network.

The mapping is documentation, not experiment

Which slot reaches which bays is published for each enclosure generation. Establishing it takes a moment and saves an installation window, because the alternative is moving a card between slots during a maintenance period to find one that works, on a blade that has to be powered down for each attempt.

Order against the position, not the model

A mezzanine card is specified by what it does and constrained by where it will sit. Quoting against the slot and the bay contents together is the only way to be confident the part will function once fitted, and it is the question we ask before a card ships rather than after it arrives.
