Operators in Lebanon have spent the last several years doing the sensible thing: consolidating. Where power is expensive, supply is not guaranteed and fuel for private generation has at times been rationed, running twenty lightly loaded ProLiant chassis to do the work of twelve is not a defensible position. So estates have been condensed. The effect on the power bill is immediate and positive. The effect on risk is less discussed and runs the other way.

Consolidation concentrates the consequences of a single failure

A consolidated estate carries more production per chassis. Each remaining node is busier, each one matters more, and the loss of a single component removes a larger share of capacity than it would have before. Virtualisation hides this until the moment it does not: the host that fails is now carrying twice the workload it used to. On an estate still under OEM entitlement, that concentration is manageable because replacement is somebody else’s contractual obligation. Once HPE support has ended on the generation in question, it becomes a sourcing problem — and a sourcing problem against a generation HPE has stopped stocking is a slow one.

The components that decide it

On a site with constrained or intermittent power, the failure profile is not evenly spread. Power supplies absorb the transfer events. Smart Array cache batteries are cycled by the same events and degrade faster than their rated life suggests. Drives dislike being spun down and back up far more than they dislike running. Those three are the ones worth holding locally on a consolidated estate, because each of them can take a heavily loaded host out of service, and none of them can be improvised.
