FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE support, cooling and parts questions for operators in Kuwait.

Yes. ICD supplies tested parts and a maintenance agreement covering ProLiant Gen8 through Gen10 Plus and MSA, 3PAR and Nimble storage.
Because in a hot climate the constraint on a floor is frequently thermal rather than financial. When summer ambient is extreme and electrical demand roughly doubles, the question stops being which servers are oldest and becomes which ones the cooling envelope can still carry. Density and heat output start deciding the retirement order.
Not automatically. An older chassis running a light load can be less of a thermal problem than a newer, denser one running hot. The useful measure is heat output against the capacity of the space it occupies, not the year on the asset register.
Three to four days from Cairo stock on the GCC lane, with customs clearance typically adding one to three days.
Yes. Dell, HPE, Lenovo, IBM and Cisco can be covered under a single agreement.

HPE End-of-Life Support in Kuwait

Refresh decisions are normally argued in financial terms: the asset is depreciated, the support contract has ended, the replacement pays for itself in efficiency. In Kuwait a different constraint frequently decides the matter first. Summer temperatures are among the highest recorded anywhere and summer electrical demand runs to roughly double the winter peak. On a data centre floor, that makes cooling headroom — not capital budget — the thing that determines what can stay racked.

Thermal capacity retires servers that money would have kept

When ambient conditions are extreme, air-based cooling loses efficiency exactly when it is needed most, and the practical limit on a room becomes how much heat it can remove rather than how much power it can deliver. The question shifts from which servers are oldest to which ones the envelope can still carry. That is not the same list. An older ProLiant running a light load can be a smaller thermal problem than a newer, denser chassis running hot, so the retirement order that makes financial sense and the one that makes thermal sense often disagree. Getting this wrong means decommissioning working hardware while the real constraint stays in the rack.

What that means for an estate past HPE support

Two things. First, the components that fail under thermal stress — power supplies, fans, and drives in the densest chassis — are the ones to hold on site, because they fail seasonally rather than randomly and they fail when replacing anything is slowest. Second, an estate that must survive a summer is an estate that needs a defined support position now, not a refresh plan for next year. ICD provides a maintenance agreement over ProLiant generations HPE no longer covers, so the thermal decision can be made on its merits rather than forced by a component nobody can source.

Clearance is planned, not improvised

Kuwait requires clearance through a locally authorised agent presenting a letter of representation together with a letter from the end user, and spare parts fall under an import licensing regime. None of that is onerous when it is arranged in advance; all of it is expensive when it is discovered during an outage. Transit is three to four days from Cairo on the GCC lane, and on this lane the clearance step is more often the variable than the flight.

What ICD supplies for HPE in Kuwait

Redundant Flexible Slot power supplies, Smart Array controllers from P4xx through P408i and P816i with cache modules and batteries, DDR3 and DDR4 memory matched to generation, SAS, SATA and NVMe drives in the correct HPE carriers, and MSA, 3PAR and Nimble storage components. Everything is tested and serial-verified and carries one to three years of warranty. Browse the HPE server parts catalogue, or the wider Kuwait server parts page.
