FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

HPE SSD endurance, wear indicator and placement questions for operators in South Korea.

Korea is in our published Asia band at 4 to 7 days door to door from Cairo, plus clearance.
Probably not. Solid-state drives have a finite total write endurance, and a drive reports healthy right up to the point it approaches that limit — at which stage it may go read-only or fail outright. It was not defective; it was used up, and the wear indicator was reporting that all along.
In the wear or endurance indicator, which is reported separately from health and is not part of any normal health check. A drive at 95 per cent of its rated writes is entirely healthy and has weeks left. Nothing surfaces that unless somebody looks for it specifically.
Placement. Database journals, transaction logs and virtual machine swap generate enormously more writes than general storage, and a read-intensive drive placed on that workload will exhaust its endurance years before an identical drive elsewhere in the same array.
A replacement restores service. Matching the drive endurance class to the workload is what stops it happening again on the same schedule, and it is worth checking which class is currently installed where.

A Drive That Was Used Up, Not Broken

An SSD reporting perfect health and then failing without warning looks like a defect and usually is not. Solid-state drives have a finite total write endurance, and a drive remains healthy in every sense until it approaches that limit, at which point it may drop to read-only or stop entirely. Nothing failed; the budget ran out.

The Warning Exists and Is Reported Elsewhere

Endurance is tracked as a wear indicator, separately from health, and it is not part of any standard health check or monitoring template. A drive at ninety-five per cent of its rated writes shows green everywhere anybody normally looks. The information has been available continuously and nobody has been asked to read it.

Placement Is Why One Drive and Not Another

Database journals, transaction logs and virtual machine swap files generate orders of magnitude more writes than general-purpose storage. A read-intensive drive placed on one of those exhausts its endurance years earlier than an identical drive elsewhere in the same estate, which is why failures cluster on particular volumes rather than at random.

Replace the Drive, Then Check the Class

A replacement restores service. Matching endurance class to workload is what prevents the same failure arriving on the same schedule, and it starts with finding out which class is installed where. ICD supplies both write-intensive and read-intensive drives for HPE generations past end of support, shipped to South Korea in 4 to 7 days, tested and covered for one to three years.
