FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Predictive warnings, rebuild margin and the Ethiopia lane.

On the East Africa card, at four to six days door-to-door from Cairo. That card names Ethiopia directly. Clearance is quoted apart from the band so the transit figure remains a transit figure.
Check the predictive status of every other member first. Controllers flag a drive that is deteriorating but still working, and those warnings are easy to leave in place for months because the array is optimal and nothing is broken. An array that loses one member and has a second already warning is entering a rebuild with far less margin than the incident suggests.
Because a rebuild is the heaviest sustained read the remaining members will ever face. Every surviving disk is read end to end, for hours or days on large capacities. A member that was marginal under ordinary load is being tested hard at exactly the moment the array has no redundancy left. That is when marginal becomes failed.
Enough to replace the failure and any member already warning, which is a question about the current state of the array rather than a general rule. We would rather quote two or three disks against a real predictive report than send one and have you call back mid-rebuild.
The controller reports predictive failure per physical drive, and the report is available without interrupting anything. On an estate past its support date these warnings accumulate, because the array keeps working and there is no support contract prompting anyone to act on them.

HPE Support in Ethiopia After End of Life

One drive fails, one drive is ordered. It is the obvious arithmetic and it is how an array that could have been repaired becomes an array that is lost. The question worth asking before ordering is not what failed, but what else was already telling you it was going to.

A Rebuild Is the Hardest Work the Surviving Disks Will Ever Do

Restoring redundancy means reading every remaining member from one end to the other and reconstructing the missing data. On high-capacity drives that is hours at best and days in practice, sustained, while the array carries production as well. Any disk that was quietly marginal under normal load is now under the heaviest read pressure of its life, during the one period when the array cannot absorb another loss.

Predictive warnings are easy to leave alone

A controller flagging a deteriorating drive is not reporting an outage. The array is optimal, the workload is served, and the warning sits in a management view as something to deal with later. On hardware with no vendor support behind it, later frequently never arrives, and warnings accumulate across an estate until a genuine failure turns one of them into the second failure.

The arithmetic of the order is the decision

Ordering one disk against a single failure is correct only if every other member is genuinely healthy. Where one is already warning, the honest order is two, and the reason is not caution for its own sake: it is that the replacement for the second drive needs to be on site before the rebuild starts, not after it has already failed. Transit time during a degraded window is the worst time to discover a shortage.

What ICD Supplies for HPE Estates in Ethiopia

Drives supplied in the quantity the array condition calls for and shipped in the caddy the enclosure addresses, Smart Array controllers reporting per-member health honestly, the cache and energy modules a controller needs to cache safely through a rebuild, MSA shelves and canisters, ProLiant chassis and boards, and supplies rated with their partner. We publish 4 to 6 days from Cairo for Ethiopia, the East Africa card figure. Everything is proven on the bench, recorded against serial, and warranted one to three years.
