HPE ProLiant Past End of Support: the Egyptian Position
Egypt's universities, research institutes and public-sector data centres standardised heavily on HPE ProLiant during the DL360 and DL380 Gen8 and Gen9 cycles. Those fleets are still doing real work in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria. HPE has closed support on Gen8 entirely and is winding down Gen9, which for most Egyptian operators arrives long before the workload justifies replacement.
The firmware problem is specific to HPE
This is where HPE differs from other vendors. Once a warranty or support contract lapses, access to Service Pack for ProLiant and individual firmware components is restricted. An administrator who could previously patch an iLO or a Smart Array controller in ten minutes finds the download gated. That is usually the moment an Egyptian IT team discovers their estate has quietly become unsupportable, and it is a licensing wall rather than a hardware one.
What ICD does about it
We supply the physical side without reservation: Smart Array P408i, P816i and E208i controllers, cache modules and the batteries that fail before anything else, DDR4 RDIMM by ProLiant generation, SAS and NVMe drives in the correct HPE carrier, and redundant PSUs. Parts are held in Cairo, so a failed controller or PSU can be on site the same working day in Greater Cairo rather than waiting on an import.
Smart Array cache batteries and silent data risk
The most common HPE fault we see in Egyptian estates is not a drive at all — it is a Smart Array cache battery that has degraded, which drops the controller into write-through mode. Performance collapses and nobody knows why. We stock the battery and cache modules by controller family and will identify the right one from the array's own report.
Storage: MSA, Nimble and 3PAR
MSA 2040 and 2050 arrays are widespread across Egyptian mid-market and education, with Nimble and 3PAR in the larger institutions. ICD supplies drives with the correct HPE carrier, controllers and shelf components, matched to the array's actual configuration. Every part is tested and serial-verified, with one to three years of warranty.
