HPE Smart Memory auto-clocking vs generic DDR4
HPE Smart Memory carries a small HPE-signed chip that the iLO and the Gen10 BIOS use to identify the DIMM as qualified — the buyer gets the validated clock, the full ECC feature set and no “uncertified memory” warning in iLO’s AHS health log. Samsung, Hynix and Micron generic server DDR4, even at identical Jedec spec, will either boot at a derated clock (2666 in a 2933-capable slot, for example) or throw a persistent health event that complicates warranty and TPM support conversations. On a DL380 Gen10 with 24 DIMM slots split across two Xeon Scalable Gen1/Gen2 sockets, mixing three Smart Memory DIMMs with a generic DDR4-2933 stick will down-clock the entire channel group to the lowest qualified speed. Practical rule Taj gives banks: populate all slots in a rank-group with the same HPE part number, keep the HPE-chip provenance end to end, and route any hybrid deployments through ICD’s QVL check before dispatch.
