10K SAS vs 7.2K NL-SAS SmartDrive Carrier compatibility
The SmartDrive Carrier trips experienced technicians regularly. Gen8 SFF carriers (with the silver release lever) do not snap into Gen9/Gen10 SFF bays without friction, and the Gen10 Basic Carrier (BC, the matte-finish rounded version) is not interchangeable with the Gen9 Smart Carrier (SC). Mixing 10K SAS (P28625-B21 class, 300GB/600GB/1.2TB SFF) with 7.2K NL-SAS LFF drives (881782-B21 class, 8TB LFF SC Helium 512E) in the same DL380 Gen10 chassis is fine electrically — the SAS expander backplane handles both — but the physical carriers are different SKUs and not cross-compatible. Mid-line 7.2K NL-SAS is rated for 55°C inlet and sustained-archive duty cycles; 10K SAS is rated for random IOPS and database duty. Mixing them in a single RAID group works but wastes the 10K IOPS on the 7.2K tail latency. Taj’s rule for Egypt banks running legacy Gen9: keep RAID groups homogeneous, use LFF 7.2K for D6020 DAS archive, use SFF 10K/15K inside the chassis for database tiers.
Saudi Arabia SABER, IOR and ZATCA reality
Since 01-Jan-2025 ZATCA and SASO enforce the full Saleem rules — every shipment line item needs a registered Product Conformity Certificate (PCoC) plus Shipment Conformity Certificate (SCoC), and the old “undertaking” grace path is closed. ICD operates through a pre-registered IOR in Riyadh with SABER product lines mapped for the top HPE SKU families, so the per-shipment SABER fee (SAR 400-800 per product line) is a known cost, not a surprise hold. FASAH single-window handles the customs entry; CITC clearance is auto-generated for non-RF items. 15% VAT applies on CIF plus duty at port of entry, invoiced by ZATCA. Arabic-language commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin are mandatory.
