Know your PERC generation

Dell’s PowerEdge RAID Controller line maps to server generations: the H330 is the entry RAID/HBA card; H730/H730P (Gen13) and H740P (Gen14) add 2-8 GB cache for write-back acceleration; H750/H755 (Gen15) bring 12G/16G performance and NVMe awareness; and legacy H700/H710/H810 serve R610/R710-era platforms. The two classic errors are putting a legacy card in a modern chassis and expecting cache-less entry cards to accelerate writes — the controller must fit both the chassis and the performance goal.

RAID levels and the BBU question

Pick the level by priority: RAID 1 for OS mirrors; RAID 5 for read-heavy capacity efficiency; RAID 6 for large nearline arrays where a second failure during a long rebuild is a real risk; RAID 10 for transactional databases needing speed and resilience. Any cached controller should carry a healthy battery/BBU or supercapacitor to protect in-flight writes through a power event — worth confirming for facilities that depend on generator failover, common across the Kingdom’s newer sites.

Hardware RAID versus HBA

If you run software-defined storage (vSAN, Storage Spaces Direct, ZFS), the controller belongs in HBA / pass-through mode so the host sees raw disks — the H330 and 9361-class cards do this well. Traditional in-card volumes want a cached PERC. Decide the storage architecture before selecting the controller.
