Deep-Technical — PERC H755N NVMe on 15G vs 16G Backplanes
A recurring pre-sales conversation: customer on R750 (15G) asks for an H755N controller because their R760 (16G) sister has one. The H755N was designed for 16G NVMe backplanes — it will physically fit into a 15G R750, but the backplane on the 15G does not expose the same x4 Gen4 lanes per slot that the 16G does. The result is NVMe operation at effectively half the bandwidth of what the spec sheet promises. For 15G NVMe storage the correct controller is H755 Adapter or the Fabric-C NVMe connector with direct-attached cabling. We will not ship H755N into a 15G chassis without explicitly flagging the bandwidth limitation.

Firmware Pre-Flashing
Before dispatch every PERC controller is flashed to match the destination server’s current BIOS/iDRAC firmware generation. Sending an H755 at firmware revision 52 into an R750 at firmware 51 will post, but will not accept the existing virtual disks without an intermediate upgrade.
