FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Dell power supply, input voltage and redundancy questions for operators in Mexico.

Yes, and we confirm the input voltage at the rack before specifying power hardware rather than assuming a standard.
It affects what a power supply can deliver. Many server supplies produce their full rated output only on high-line input and are derated on low-line, so the same unit in the same chassis delivers less on a 127V circuit than on a 220V one. The rating on the label is the high-line figure.
A chassis specified for its full configuration is installed on a low-line circuit and the supplies cannot sustain the load. Sometimes it will not power on with all components fitted; more often it runs and the redundancy is not real, because a single supply on low-line cannot carry the chassis if the other fails.
It may log a power-configuration warning, and it will not tell you that your redundancy is notional. That is the dangerous version: a chassis that looks redundant, has two supplies fitted, and would not survive losing one.
The actual voltage at the rack and the derated output of the supply at that voltage, against the configured load of the chassis. If the numbers do not leave margin for a single-supply condition, the redundancy is on paper only.

The Rating on the Label Assumes High Line

Server power supplies are labelled with a wattage that is achievable on high-line input. On low-line — the 127V circuits common in Mexican industrial and commercial buildings — many of the same units are derated and deliver materially less. The supply is not faulty and the label is not wrong; it simply describes a condition the rack may not provide.

The Failure Is in the Redundancy, Not the Operation

A chassis in this situation usually runs perfectly well on two supplies, because together they carry the load. What has quietly disappeared is the ability of one to carry it alone. The machine presents as fully redundant, with two healthy supplies fitted and no fault reported, and it would not survive losing either of them.

Nothing Describes It as Wrong

A power-configuration warning may appear in the management log. What no system reports is the thing that matters: that the redundancy being displayed is notional. Both supplies are present and healthy, which is all the health view is designed to establish, and the derated arithmetic is not something the chassis evaluates on your behalf.

It Is an Arithmetic Check, Done Once

Measure the voltage actually present at the rack, find the derated output of the supply at that voltage, and compare it with the configured load of the chassis under a single-supply condition. If there is no margin, the redundancy is on paper. ICD specifies power hardware against the site rather than the default and supplies across PowerEdge and Dell EMC generations past Dell support, tested and covered for one to three years.
