Dell End-of-Life Support in Iraq

Iraq is building new data centre capacity faster than it is retiring the old. A National Data Center in Baghdad, a state-backed facility programme, expanded fibre backhaul and an additional submarine cable link are all pulling investment toward greenfield infrastructure. What that programme does not answer is what happens to the Dell PowerEdge estate already carrying production in ministries, banks, telecom operations and oil-sector back offices — hardware bought across the last decade that a consolidation plan displaces but does not immediately replace.

Displaced is not decommissioned

Consolidation projects move workloads in sequence. A workload is validated on the new platform, run in parallel, then cut over, then observed before anything is switched off. On a large estate that sequence runs for quarters, not weeks. Throughout it, the outgoing servers carry real load with no OEM entitlement behind them, because Dell support lapsed on a calendar that had nothing to do with the migration schedule. The riskiest hardware in the building is often the hardware everyone has already mentally retired.

Baghdad and Erbil are one estate on two clocks

Capacity in Iraq is concentrated in Baghdad, with a distinct and separately operated presence in Erbil. For an organisation with both, a single spares strategy is harder than it looks: the two sites often carry different PowerEdge generations, bought at different times through different channels, and a controller or backplane that fits one will not necessarily fit the other. Treating them as one pool without checking generation compatibility is how a spare arrives and cannot be fitted.
