Get the DDR generation right
Speed is locked to the platform. 14G servers (R640/R740, Xeon Scalable Gen1/2) take DDR4-2666 or 2933; 15G (R650/R750, Ice Lake) take DDR4-3200; 16G (R660/R760, Sapphire Rapids) move to DDR5-4800. A DIMM faster than the platform simply down-clocks; a slower DIMM drags its whole channel to the lower timing. There is no benefit to over-spec’ing the module — only to matching it.

The population rules that protect performance
PowerEdge memory is sensitive to layout. Populate channels symmetrically (A1/B1 before A2/B2) so the controller interleaves; match rank and speed within each channel, because mixing single- and dual-rank or 2400 and 2933 modules forces the bank to the slowest common setting; and respect the DIMMs-per-channel limit, which can de-rate frequency as slots fill. A server can boot with a bad layout yet run memory hundreds of MHz below spec — order in balanced kits to avoid it.
RDIMM or LRDIMM
RDIMM (Registered) is the standard up to 64 GB per module with the lowest latency. LRDIMM (Load-Reduced) lets you fill every slot at the largest capacities (128 GB+) without overloading the bus — the right choice for maximum-RAM nodes.
