Speed follows the server generation

The correct DDR speed is platform-locked, not a preference: 14G (R640/R740, Xeon Scalable Gen1/2) takes DDR4-2666/2933; 15G (R650/R750, Ice Lake) takes DDR4-3200; 16G (R660/R760, Sapphire Rapids) takes DDR5-4800. A faster module clocks down to the platform; a slower one limits the channel. The goal is to match the validated speed, not exceed it.

Current 14G hosts use the A9365699 32 GB RDIMM or the 370-AEQE 16 GB, while older R620/R720-era servers still in service are supported by the legacy 0R3M1C 16 GB DDR3 — a practical option where fleets are extended rather than replaced.

RDIMM and LRDIMM

RDIMM (Registered) is the enterprise standard up to 64 GB per module with the lowest latency, and covers the great majority of deployments. LRDIMM (Load-Reduced) accepts a small latency penalty to let you populate every slot at the largest capacities (128 GB+) on a maximum-RAM node. Population rules that protect rated speed

PowerEdge memory must be laid out correctly: fill channels symmetrically (A1/B1 before A2/B2) for interleaving; match rank and speed within a channel, since mixing forces the bank to the slowest timing; and respect the DIMMs-per-channel limit, which can de-rate frequency as slots fill. A poor layout boots but underperforms — order in balanced kits.
