PowerEdge population rules you cannot ignore

Dell servers are unforgiving about how DIMMs are arranged. Three rules govern every install: (1) populate channels symmetrically — fill A1/B1 before A2/B2 so the memory controller can interleave; (2) match rank and speed across a channel, because mixing single-rank and dual-rank, or 2933 and 3200 modules, forces the whole bank down to the slowest common timing; and (3) respect the per-socket DIMM-per-channel limit, which often de-rates frequency as you fill more slots. Getting this wrong means a server that boots but runs RAM hundreds of MHz below spec.

The right DDR speed is generation-locked: 14G (R640/R740, Xeon Scalable Gen1/2) runs DDR4-2666/2933; 15G (R650/R750, Ice Lake) runs DDR4-3200; 16G (R660/R760, Sapphire Rapids) moves to DDR5-4800. A faster DIMM in an older board simply clocks down; a slower DIMM in a newer board caps the channel.

LRDIMM (Load-Reduced) trades a small latency penalty for the ability to populate every slot at the highest capacities (128 GB+) without overloading the memory bus — the right call when you need a fully-loaded, maximum-RAM node.
