Form factor first: SFF or LFF
Every Dell mechanical-drive decision starts with the backplane. 2.5″ SFF drives — typically 10K and 15K SAS — feed dense, IOPS-led tiers; 3.5″ LFF drives — 7.2K nearline SAS/SATA — deliver the lowest cost-per-terabyte for backup, media and object storage. The carrier is part of the equation: an LFF drive cannot seat in an SFF cage, and the caddy generation (Gen13 vs Gen14/15) must match the chassis even when the bare drive does.

Security: ISE versus SED
Standard ISE (Instant Secure Erase) drives cover most workloads. But the UAE’s financial-services and government tenants increasingly mandate encryption at rest — for those, SED (Self-Encrypting Drive) media keeps data ciphered on the platters and crypto-erases in seconds at decommission, which simplifies compliant disposal under local data-protection norms.
