SFF, LFF and the backplane that decides both

The form-factor choice is fundamental: 2.5″ SFF SAS (10K/15K) drives dense, IOPS-led tiers; 3.5″ LFF (7.2K nearline) gives the lowest cost-per-terabyte for backup, archive and surveillance. A 3.5″ drive will not physically seat in an SFF cage, and the Dell caddy generation must match the chassis even when the bare drive is compatible. When expanding an existing RAID set, keep RPM and interface speed uniform — a mixed 10K/7.2K volume runs at the weakest link.
