Front vs Rear Drive Tray Compatibility on R740xd
The R740xd chassis accepts 24 front 2.5″ SFF drives plus optional 4 rear 2.5″ SFF — or 12 front 3.5″ LFF plus mid-plane 4x 3.5″ plus rear 4x 2.5″. The gotcha: front trays and rear trays use different sled SKUs. A 3.5″ LFF caddy used in a front LFF slot will NOT mount into a rear-2.5″ slot even though the sled latches look similar. Customers have ordered drive-plus-caddy kits expecting universal fit and found the rear cage rejecting the sled. We ship with the matched sled SKU for the exact bay you are populating — front 3.5″, rear 2.5″, or mid-plane — no guesswork.
Dell EMC Unity Xt 15-Disk DAE Replenishment
Unity Xt 380F/480F/680F/880F storage arrays run 15-disk 3.5″ LFF DAEs with NL-SAS drives at 4TB/6TB/8TB/10TB/12TB/14TB/16TB 7.2K. Dell firmware on these drives is tied to the DAE controller generation. We pre-flash drives to the customer’s current Unity Xt release before dispatch, which shortens the add-disk workflow from 30 minutes per drive (firmware negotiation) to under 5 minutes.
