Dell PowerEdge R440 vs R450 — Entry 1U Comparison
R440 and R450 are Dell’s entry-level 1U two-socket servers. They differ from the R640/R650 flagship 1U line in three ways: fewer memory slots (16 vs 24), smaller PSU ceiling, and a simpler expansion riser — but they carry the same CPU family and similar performance ceilings for most workloads. For branch-office and mid-market deployments where the flagship 1U is over-specced, these are the right call.

Branch-office fit
Both servers fit the same role: branch-office server, small-business consolidation host, dev/test node, telecom edge compute. The R440 running a Xeon Silver 4214 (12 cores, 85W) with 128GB RAM costs a fraction of the R640. The R450 same spec with Xeon Silver 4310 is the 15G equivalent.
Where R450 wins: PCIe Gen 4 NIC support (100 GbE without bottleneck), DDR4-3200 for slightly better memory-bound performance, higher 1100W PSU option for GPU-attach scenarios.
Where R440 is still the buy: refurb pricing. R440 refurb lands USD 500–900 for a chassis-plus-1-CPU-plus-64GB starter build. R450 refurb is still USD 1,400–2,200. For edge sites where the server replaces nothing and adds little load, the R440 is the pragmatic answer.
Memory specifics
Both have only 16 DIMM slots (half of R640/R650). This caps practical memory deploys at 512GB (16 × 32GB) or 1TB (16 × 64GB LRDIMM) on R440, or 2TB (16 × 128GB) on R450.
R440 memory: DDR4-2666 / 2933 RDIMM. Representative PNs: 1VRGY, CG17D, D715X, 370-ADVZ, 370-ADWK, 370-AEOI.
R450 memory: DDR4-3200 RDIMM native. Representative PNs: 6VDNY, 74FPM, 75X1V, HF6GX.
Drive and storage
4-10 SFF / 4 LFF (R440) — typical spec is 4 × 3.5″ LFF for simple file-share or 10 × 2.5″ SFF for mixed SAS/SSD. R450 runs the same bay count with optional NVMe support on up to 2 or 4 bays depending on backplane choice.
NVMe on R450 is entry-grade — one PERC H355 or H755 controller with limited lane count. If you need dense NVMe, step up to R650.
ICD-stocked SAS SSDs for both: 0184M, 01Y7M, 03VVP, 03XGD. 10K SFF HDDs: 01M0D, 029V4, 03YT5. NVMe for R450: 08M01, 0D4GH, 0HVC7.
Power — the 1U reality
R440 ships 550W or 750W. That ceiling means: 2 × 85W CPU + 16 × DIMM + 8 × SFF SSD sits comfortably under 350W load, leaving PSU at 50 % utilisation — efficient. Go dual 165W CPU and you are at the redundancy edge.
R450 extends to 1100W, giving headroom for a dual 185W CPU plus PCIe card (GPU or specialised accelerator). For most mid-market deploys this headroom is unused.
Stocked PSU PNs: R440-class 750W 061XT, 0FH2D, 0G34N; R450-class 1100W 1JDDV, 1Y45R, 38GYJ.
Decision matrix
- Net-new edge deploy, 5-year horizon → R450 (current gen, active OEM support).
- Replacement for failed R440 in production → R440 refurb (keep fleet consistent, lower TCO).
- Budget-constrained branch rollout → R440 refurb at USD 600–900 per node.
- Workload at 2 CPU × 36 cores × 2TB RAM ceiling → R450 (R440 caps at 1TB).
- Need for NVMe hot-tier → step up to R640/R650 instead.
ICD stock
Both chassis available refurb from ICD Cairo and Dubai. Memory, PSU, drives, and PERC spares for both platforms in-stock. Submit RFQ with chassis spec and drive count; quote within same working day.
Regional inventory and shipping
ICD maintains R440 and R450 spares across three hubs: Cairo (Maadi main + Mohandseen branch) for Egypt and North Africa, Dubai Jebel Ali for GCC and East Africa, and a consignment channel in Lagos for Nigerian customers. Typical delivery windows: Cairo to Alexandria or Mansoura 1 day, Cairo to Casablanca or Tunis 4–6 days, Dubai to Riyadh or Kuwait City 2 days, Dubai to Nairobi 3–5 days.
For edge-site fleet deploys (10+ R440 or R450 units across multiple branches), ICD offers staged shipping coordinated with site-readiness dates — one chassis at a time rather than bulk delivery that ties up inventory at headquarters. Quoted on project basis.
Warranty and service
Every R440 or R450 shipped new from ICD carries Dell ProSupport 3-year NBD standard, upgradeable to ProSupport Plus 4-hour mission-critical on request. Refurb chassis carry ICD Care+ 1-year warranty standard, extendable to 3 years. Both platforms qualify for ICD’s parts-held-on-site program for customers with 5+ nodes at a single location — critical spares (one PSU, one DIMM, one drive) staged at customer site for zero-wait swap.
Build consultation
ICD presales engineering reviews every R440/R450 RFQ against workload requirements — virtualisation host density, backup-target sizing, DC infrastructure role. No auto-generated quotes; every spec goes through engineering review before pricing. Request a quote with workload description, expected VM count or file-share size, and ICD returns a validated spec within 4 business hours.
