Tri-mode controllers and what they unlock
The headline capability on newer UCS is the tri-mode (24G) controller, which presents SAS, SATA and U.2/U.3 NVMe drives through a single card — letting you mix high-endurance NVMe and capacity SAS in one chassis without separate controllers. In RAID mode it carries FBWC for write protection; in HBA mode (the M1 HBA part) it passes drives straight through for vSAN, HyperFlex or Ceph. Two cautions for UAE deployments: NVMe-under-RAID has different performance characteristics than direct-attached NVMe, so for the lowest latency many designs run NVMe in pass-through and reserve hardware RAID for SAS/SATA; and controller generation still matters — a 24G card belongs in the M6/M7 servers validated for it, not retrofitted into older nodes. Boot stays on the dedicated M.2 RAID controller regardless.
