A power supply is the one component in a Cisco UCS or Catalyst chassis where a wrong choice shows up as an outage, not just slower performance. Wattage has to cover the populated configuration, redundancy mode has to match how the platform shares load, and airflow direction has to agree with the rest of the rack. Wattage, redundancy and airflow — the three checks

First, wattage headroom: size the PSU to the fully-populated server or switch — CPUs, all DIMMs, drives and any GPUs — not the as-shipped base, and leave margin. Second, redundancy mode: UCS supports N+1 and grid (N+N) redundancy, and both PSUs in a pair must be the same wattage and type or the chassis will not hold true redundancy; a mismatched pair can fall back to non-redundant. Third, airflow direction: Catalyst and Nexus PSUs ship in port-side-intake and port-side-exhaust variants — installing the wrong airflow disrupts the hot-aisle/cold-aisle design and can trip thermal protection. AC and DC are never interchangeable; the unit must match the facility’s power feed.
