FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cisco uplink capacity and oversubscription questions for operators in the USA.

Yes, to the published one. The North America band on our shipping page reads 5 to 7 days door-to-door from Cairo and names the United States, and we commit to that band rather than to a figure invented per order.
Into the uplink. An access switch aggregates many access ports onto a much smaller number of uplinks, and the ratio between them is what the edge can actually deliver off the switch. Raising access port speed without raising uplink capacity increases the oversubscription ratio and changes nothing a user experiences.
On an estate that has been upgraded in stages, considerably worse than anyone intends, because each upgrade was sized against the ports being replaced rather than against the path out. The access layer is where money is visible and the uplink is where the constraint actually lives.
Access ports well below capacity, uplinks at or near line rate during busy periods, and users reporting slowness that no individual port statistic explains. The signature is on a different interface from the one being investigated, which is why it survives a lot of troubleshooting.
By sizing on the uplink and the ratio behind it rather than on access port count. We supply uplink modules, Catalyst and Nexus platforms, UCS components, matched optics and correctly sized supplies, on the 5 to 7 day North America lane. Every part is verified under load, serial-logged, and warranted one to three years.

The Edge Is Limited by the Path Out

An access switch concentrates a large number of access ports onto a small number of uplinks. The ratio between the two is the oversubscription ratio, and it is what determines what the access layer can actually deliver beyond the switch itself. American operators who upgrade access port speed and see no user-visible improvement have usually moved the constraint nowhere, because it was never at the access port.

Upgrades Make the Ratio Worse

Each upgrade is normally sized against the ports being replaced. Faster access ports, same uplinks, and the ratio silently doubles. Performed in stages across a network over several years, this produces oversubscription far beyond what anyone would have specified deliberately, arrived at through a series of individually sensible purchases. The access layer is where capacity is visible and budgeted; the uplink is where it is consumed.

The evidence is on the wrong interface

When the uplink is the limit, access port statistics look comfortable. Utilisation is modest, there are no errors, and nothing about the port under investigation suggests a problem — because there isn't one. The saturation is on the uplink, during busy periods, on an interface nobody is looking at because no user is connected to it. This is why the fault survives extended troubleshooting and gets attributed to applications or to the wide area link.

What to measure

Take the ratio directly: total access bandwidth provisioned against total uplink bandwidth available, per switch. Then look at uplink utilisation during the busiest period rather than as a daily average, because an average hides exactly the interval users are complaining about. Those two numbers together settle the question before any hardware is bought.

What ICD Supplies for Cisco Estates in the USA

Uplink modules and the optics that populate them, Catalyst and Nexus platforms and line cards, UCS blade, rack and fabric hardware, transceivers picked for the receiving platform and the distance, and power supplies sized for the modules actually installed. Tell us the access bandwidth and the uplinks it has to leave through and we will size against the ratio. Because the United States is in the published North America band, consignments run a 5 to 7 day door-to-door lane from Cairo. Every part is verified under load, serial-logged, and warranted one to three years.
