Cisco Support in Oman After End of Life
At a carrier-neutral interconnect it is the other side that sets your requirements. ICD supplies the Cisco optics and switching that keep an older estate interoperable after Cisco withdraws it.
Hardware That Has to Interoperate
Cisco components on the boundary between an estate and everybody else connected to it.

Cisco End-of-Life Support in Oman
Oman has been building interconnect capability rather than just capacity — carrier-neutral facilities outside the capital, cable landing infrastructure, and the neutral exchange arrangements that let networks meet each other directly. For an operator with equipment in one of those facilities, this produces a requirement that does not exist in a private data centre: the standard your hardware has to meet is set by everyone else plugged into the same building.
At a boundary the requirement is negotiated, not chosen
Inside your own estate you decide when to move from 10G to 40G to 100G, and you do it when the business case closes. At an interconnect you do it when your counterparties do, because the alternative is being the party that cannot take the higher-speed cross-connect, cannot support the newer optical standard, or forces a slower interconnect on a peer who has already upgraded. The pressure is commercial rather than technical, and it arrives on a timetable set outside the organisation, frequently landing on hardware nobody had scheduled to touch.
Older Cisco platforms are usually more capable than assumed
The instinct when a counterparty upgrades is that the platform must be replaced. Often it does not. A Nexus chassis several generations old will accept current-generation optics and higher-speed uplink modules, and can hold an interconnect at a standard well beyond what it shipped with. The real constraint is almost never the chassis. It is obtaining the modules for a platform Cisco has moved past end of support, at a moment when the requirement is external and the timeline is not yours.
A module that almost works is worse than none
Boundary hardware punishes approximation. An optic that negotiates intermittently, or that links but errors under load, produces a fault that looks like a problem on the other side of the cross-connect. It gets escalated to a counterparty, investigated by two organisations, and eventually traced back — expensively, and in front of exactly the audience an operator would rather not demonstrate that to. Where an exact part no longer exists we say so before dispatch rather than shipping the nearest equivalent and letting the difference surface as an interconnect fault.
Ambient conditions at the boundary
Inland temperatures in Oman have exceeded fifty degrees and air cooling loses efficiency sharply at that ambient. High-speed optics are among the components most sensitive to it: a module running hot drifts, errors and fails earlier than its rated life, and on a boundary port that failure is the most visible kind. Redundant supplies, fan trays and spare optics rated for the conditions are worth holding rather than ordering. ICD supplies tested, serial-verified Cisco components with one to three years of warranty on a three to four day lane from Cairo.
