FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Cisco security appliance, switching and end-of-support questions for operators in Austria.

Yes, chassis, supplies and interface hardware for platforms past Cisco end of support. Hardware only — we make no claim about software currency.
No, and the difference is worth being blunt about. A switch forwards packets and an old one forwards them correctly. A security appliance is supposed to recognise current threats, and that recognition comes from software and signature updates that stop with support. The hardware works; its purpose degrades.
Keeping the hardware alive and keeping the security posture current are separate questions with separate answers. We can address the first honestly. The second is a decision about whether an appliance that cannot be updated still belongs at the edge, and it is not a hardware problem.
Because supplying a firewall chassis without saying this would leave an impression we do not intend. The part will restore the appliance to working order, and working order for an unsupported security device is not the same as protection.
Whether that appliance is the only control on the path it sits on. Where it is, hardware availability is the smaller half of the problem.

Not All End-of-Support Hardware Carries the Same Risk

A switch that has passed end of support forwards packets exactly as it always did. Its function does not depend on knowing anything about the current world, so age costs it nothing but the entitlement. A security appliance is different in kind: its usefulness depends on recognising threats that did not exist when support ended.

The Hardware Works and the Purpose Degrades

This is the distinction that matters and it is easily lost. Restoring a firewall chassis to working order is a hardware exercise and we can do it. What that restores is an appliance in the state it was in when its updates stopped, which is not the same as a functioning control. The device passes every health check and is doing progressively less of what it was bought for.

Two Separate Questions With Separate Answers

Whether the hardware can be kept alive is a supply question, and the answer is generally yes. Whether an appliance that can no longer be updated still belongs on that path is an architecture and risk decision, and it is not one that buying a part resolves. Conflating them is how an estate ends up reassured by a repair.

Why We Say So Rather Than Simply Selling the Part

Supplying a security chassis without stating this would leave an impression we do not intend. ICD supplies appliance, switching, routing and optical hardware for platforms past Cisco end of support, tested and covered for one to three years — and is explicit that hardware supply addresses availability, not security currency.
